About Pachmarhi

Pachmarhi, the only hill station of Madhya Pradesh is situated in a valley of the Satpura Range in Hoshangabad district, at a height of 1,067 meters above sea level. state of Central India. Widely known as “Satpura ki Rani” (Queen of Satpura), Pachmarhi also boasts of housing the highest point of Madhya Pradesh, Dhoopgarh (at 1,352 meters above sea level). Pachmarhi is a part of Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve and has been the location of a cantonment (Pachmarhi Cantonment) since British Raj, soon after its discovery by Captain James Forsyth of the Bengal Lancers.

Pachmarhi has been a part of Satpura Tiger Reserve since the year 2000, and thus is the home of many rare species of flora and fauna. Popular for its breathtaking views and waterfalls, this place is a heaven for bird and butterfly watchers. One must visit the Interpretation Centers at Bison Lodge and Dhoopgarh to gain a thorough appreciation of the wonders that Pachmarhi has to offer.

The name Pachmarhi is believed to be derived from the Hindi words “Panch” (five) and “Marhi” (caves) - the famous Pandav Caves. Legend says that these caves were built by the five Pandava brothers of Mahabharatha era during their thirteen years of exile. Various other caves around Pachmarhi have many ancient stories carved onto them as rock paintings, some of which are even 10,000 years old!

  • Flora & Fauna
  • The forests are dominated by teak (Tectona grandis). They include the westernmost groves of sal (Shorea robusta), which is the dominant tree of eastern India forests. Other endemic vegetation includes wild mango, silver fern, jamun and arjun.
  • Large mammal species include tiger, leopard, wild boar, gaur (Bos gaurus), chital deer (Axis axis), muntjac deer, sambar deer (Cervus unicolor), and Rhesus macaque.
    The endemic fauna includes chinkara, nilgai, wild dogs, the Indian wolf, Indian gaur, Indian giant squirrel, and flying squirrel.

  • This hill station is open for visitors, throughout the year. According to their convenience, festivals and holidays, tourists remain present at Pachmarhi in all seasons. Being a hill station, the best time to visit Pachmarhi is from October to April. In this time, the climate remains calm and the presence of greenery makes this destination more photogenic.

The climate at Pachmarhi is mild, generally warm and temperate, with an average temperature of 21.7°C. The summers here have much more rainfall than winters. The rainfall here averages at 2012 mm. At an average temperature of 30.3 °C, May is the hottest month of the year. At 15.5 °C on average, December is the coldest month of the year.

  • Accommodation available with Park Management
There are 3 forest rest houses at Pachmarhi, each with double bedrooms and can be booked through the Satpura Tiger Reserve office. Accommodation can be booked in advanced during the office hours (1030-1730 hrs) over phone (+917574-254394) & email (ddsatnp.hbd@mp.gov.in). The right of reservation of the resthouses remain with the Field Director, Satpura Tiger Reserve.
In special circumstances, the reservation of tourist can be canceled in the interest of forest and wildlife protection or in case of tours of VIPs like Honorable High Court Judges / District Court Judges, Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary, Secretaries, Head of the Departments, Ministers etc. The cancellation information will be given to the concerned person on telephone as soon as possible. In such cases either the reservation will be adjusted in other dates or the advance fees will be refunded. The fees will not be refunded if the tourist cancels his/her reservation.

By Air: Pachmarhi is about 260km from Jabalpur city and 230km from Bhopal city. Both the cities have their own airports. Jabalpur airport is has flight connectivity with Delhi, Mumbai, Indore, etc. whereas Bhopal airport have direct flight connectivity with Delhi, Ahmedabad, Indore, Raipur, Hyderabad, etc. Nagpur is about 285km from Pachmarhi and has a better flight connectivity with cities like Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi, Indore, Kolkata, Sharjah, etc. and thus can be another option to reach here.

By Train: Nearest railway station for Pachmarhi is Pipariya railway station (Railway station code: PPI), located at a distance of 50kms (01:30hrs). Pipariya station has direct train connectivity with important cites and tourist destinations like Jabalpur, Bhopal, Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi, Howrah (Kolkata), Agra, Gwalior, Ahmedabad, Nagpur etc. If you do not find a direct train to Pipariya station, then second option is to reach Itarsi railway station at a distance of 150kms from Pachmarhi which is a important railway junction.

By Road: Pachmarhi is well connected by road. Although you are coming by flight or train but the final journey to Pachmarhi has to be done by road. Owing to the Army cantonment located here, the road condition remains good and well-maintained. It is open for visitors throughout the year. You can easily reach Pachmarhi by road from nearby cities like Bhopal, Jabalpur, Nagpur, Indore, Kanha Tiger Reserve, Pench Tiger Reserve, etc.
